What is Boswellia?

Boswellia extract comes from the boswellia tree that is found in regions of Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. Also known as Indian frankincense or salai guggal the extract is made from the sap or resin of the boswellia tree. Boswellia has been used for thousands of years to treat a wide range of diseases, and it is once again gaining popularity as an all-natural alternative treatment for many conditions.

What is Boswellia Used For?

Traditionally boswellia extract has been used to treat conditions such as diabetes, skin and blood diseases, fevers, cardiovascular disorders, neurological disorders, rheumatism, dysentery, and diseases of the testes. Boswellia was used in ancient Egypt during the process of mummifying and cremating the dead, and for treating skin conditions. The extract has also been used for thousands of years in India because of the belief that it was what awarded elephants their longevity and health, and the hope that it would do the same for humans.

Today, boswellia is used almost exclusively for its anti-inflammatory properties. Boswellia extract contains what is known as boswellic acid, which is where the bulk of the anti-inflammatory compounds are believed to be held.  The diseases that may benefit from a treatment using the extract are rheumatoid and osteo arthritis, ulcerative colitis or inflammatory bowel disease, asthma, and menstrual cramps. It is believed that boswellia may have anti-cancer properties as well.

Boswellia and Arthritis

Research indicates that boswellia extract may help do slow or stop the deterioration of cartilage and joint tissue and also reduces the cells that contribute to inflammation. Studies have been done on both humans and dogs with great results. Those that participated saw an increase in range of motion and reduced pain and stiffness. Both patients suffering from osteo- and rheumatoid arthritis showed results.

Boswellia and Ulcerative Colitis

Ulcerative colitis, also known as inflammatory bowel disease is characterized by chronic inflammation in the intestines and digestive tract. It is believed that boswellia can reduce the intestinal damage and inflammation by decreasing the number of cells contributing to the inflammation and increasing the cells that fight against it. In studies those that took a supplement of Boswellia extract for 6 weeks saw a significant improvement in their condition. Some even experienced complete remission of their symptoms.

Boswellia and Cancer

Could boswellia be a cure for cancer?  Research on the extract is still in early stages, but there have been some promising findings. Boswellia was shown to cause a decrease in the spread of leukemia cancer cells. The extract was also shown to cause cell death or apoptosis in the affected cells.

Side Effects of Boswellia

Although side effects from using boswellia extract are considered very rare, some people may experience heartburn, diarrhea, skin rashes, and nausea.

Conclusion

Many of the tests and research done on the benefits of boswellia have found very exciting and encouraging results. This could be great news for many who suffer from the conditions above that are looking for a natural alternative to more intense drugs. You should always talk to your doctor though, before changing medications or treatments.
